June 2013 Community Events

June 11. Meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA). This month’s agenda includes an update regarding the renovation of the Watervalley Lake Bandstand, a discussion about the installation of speed bumps on Hasty Street, and a continued discussion about an ordinance regarding the use of bathroom porcelain as yard art. The motion was tabled due to the heated discussion from last month.

Tea June 12. The Society Book Club Meeting.  This month the SBC will be reviewing Margaret Thatcher: The Authorised Biography, by Charles Moore. Tiny Loftin will lead the review discussion and the meeting will be held at the home of Camilla Tindale. In keeping with the theme of the book, the meeting time has been moved to 2:00 in order for the ladies to enjoy high tea rather than a light luncheon. Camilla has noted that she will be “decorating the house to a British theme with Etonian banners and Union Jacks.” (Like anybody cares.)

On a similar note, the Three Sisters Beauty Salon is offering a $10.00 dollar discount during the entire month of June for anybody wanting to have their hair done like Margaret Thatcher.

June 15. Watervalley Line Dance and Bingo Club. The monthly gathering of the LD&BC will be at the Memorial Building starting at 6:30. This month the Dog Creek Howlers are the main event playing a great variety of Blue Grass. The lead howler, Lester Crump, will be dressed like Snoop Dog since he lost a bet when the Lady Vols softball team finished second in the National Championship. You won’t want to miss this.

June 16-22. Interchurch Council Vacation Bible School. This year VBS will be held at the All Saint’s Episcopal Church and be for ages six through twelve. The fun will start at 10:00 and end at 2:00 sharp. Parents, please be mindful of timely pickup.

This years VBS will have a Duck Dynasty theme and all participants are encouraged to wear their camo. There will be lots of crafts, games, and bible stories with a skit about hunting for souls at the end of the week. The fee is $20.00. Scholarships available. Call Imogene Duncan at the Episcopal Church for details.

June 21. Chicks with Sticks Knitting Club. The CSKC will meet at 10:00 in the conference room of the Watervalley Library. This month Sue Ann Matthews will be providing an instructive demonstration of how to knit a decorative lampshade cover.

June 25. Dance Recital. Twyla Parker of “Center Stage Dance Academy and Gymnastics” has announced that the summer recital will be at 7:00 PM at the Memorial Building. This year’s theme will be “Not So Dirty Dancing” featuring dance steps from yesteryear including the Lindy Hop, the Carolina Shag, the Cakewalk, the Rumba, and some Big Band Swing. It promises to be a fun evening of art and entertainment. Come out and watch the kids and feel like one yourself. Admission is free.
